William James Basie, mejor conocido como Count Basie, falleció el 26 de abril de 1984 a los 79 años debido a un cáncer de páncreas que lo aquejó por algún tiempo. Este pianista y director de orquesta, discípulo de Willie “The Lion” Smith y de Fats Waller, tocó con legendarios jazzistas como Bessie Smith, Lester Young, Jo Jones, Sara Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, e incluso con Frank Sinatra.
